Time to dust off those ‘Muahahas’, because today Kalypso Media announced the third iteration of their evil-overlord-simulator and RTS (real time strategy) game Dungeons 3, which will be making an appearance at GDC 2017 in San Francisco. Clap. Or else!
If you were ever a fan of Dungeon Keeper and/or Dungeon Keeper 2 —the original (and classic) evil overlord /dungeon management games developed by Bullfrog Entertainment and released by Electronic Arts for the PC in the late 90’s—then know that Dungeons 2 (released in 2015) was the best, closest resurrection of the Dungeon Keeper games in recent years.
So on a personal level it’s welcome news that we’ll be getting a Dungeons 3. I was a huge fan of the Dungeon Keeper games and Dungeons 2 got a very favorable review from me. Its predecessor Dungeon Lord, however, did not.
But Kalypso Media took the negative reviews for Dungeon Lord to heart and essentially went back to the drawing board. The result was Dungeons 2, which was much closer to its inspirations, but still innovated enough to rise above being a mere Dungeon Keeper clone.
In Dungeons 3, our stalwart Dungeon Lord has successfully united the forces of evil and established the roots of his dark empire. Of course, evil is never one to sit on its success, so now it’s time to expand. The Dungeon Lord has convinced a dark elf priestess, Thalya, to serve as commander and help conquer the fluffy, shiny, unicorn-overrun Overworld. You can ‘Muahahaha’ now.
Key Dungeons 3 features (courtesy of Kalypso Media)
